Argentina and Japan Photograph Album 1947-1951.

This series comprises approximately one thousand black and white photographs taken of United Lutheran Church in America mission fields in Argentina and Japan. These photographs are c. 1947-1951 and were originally part of an extensive photograph album. These images either are individual prints or were part of contact sheets but, for purposes of creating the album, were separated into individual frames and affixed to a backing. Each photograph is assigned a number with the prefix "A," for Argentina, or "J," for Japan. For preservation purposes, this album has been separated into individual pages and loose photographs have been grouped together in numeric sequence and by subject matter. Photographs related to the Argentina mission field are mostly identified, but undated. Photographs A1-A196 are prints and those for A197-A555 are from contact sheets. Subject matter of these photographs includes education, worship, church buildings and structures, transportation, and cityscapes and landscapes. Most of these photographs were taken in the areas in which the ULCA had a mission presence: Jose C. Paz, Azul, Olavania, Tandil, San Miguel, Buenos Aires, Berisso, Ballaster, Caseros, Eldorado, and Posadas. ULCA missionaries who appear in some of the photographs include Myrtle Wilkie, who served in Argentina from 1927-1966; the Rev. Levon H. Spath, who served in Argentina from 1945-1958; and the Rev. Albert Alsop, who served in Argentina from 1945-1963. Almost all the photographs for Japan are from contact sheets. Photographs J1-J209 do include some that are identified, but photographs J210-J523 have no identification and are undated. Subject matter for these photographs includes church dedications, family life, education, student life, worship, and the seminary. The few photographs that are identified include those of Boyd Hamm Chapel, Nagoya; the Colony of Mercy; Hakata Lutheran Church, Kumamoto; Kyushu Gakuin school; and Okubo Church, Tokyo. Several of the photographs include the Rev. L.S.G. Miller, missionary to Japan from 1908-1951. Items are arranged numerically. For what appears to be pages of photographs for the same type of photograph album for Liberia, see ULCA 19/4/2 Mission Photographs, ca. 1890s-1960.
